Regulatory updates in Personal Care
Customer product safety:
Silicones are used in Personal Care. Their application varies from gloss enhancer to carrier material for active ingredients. Also, they are used in the Personal Care Industry for aesthetic effects in end products. BRB offers a wide range of solutions in all personal care areas including hair care, body care and color cosmetics. Early 2018, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) restricted permitted levels of D4, D5 and D6 in personal care products and included these siloxanes on their EU REACH Candidate List for Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). This means there are existing or predicted environmental issues regarding biodegradability and toxicity.
REACH is the European Chemicals Law and stands for Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals. REACH addresses the production and use of chemical substances, and their potential impacts on both human health and the environment. Being REACH compliant, BRB International has adapted both the production facility and the production process to the new laws and regulations, even though they didn’t enter into force in 2019 yet. Protecting both customer health and the environment are key to BRB International and the company takes the lead in informing key players on the current legal status of cyclic silicone compounds and suggested solutions, such as formulation examples without cyclic silicone compounds.
CSR in the chain
At BRB International we see opportunities and threats when we look at CSR issues in our chain. We continue to look at market trends commercially, and also place great value on innovation and conscious choices for better, healthier raw materials and products. Our organization is also prepared to invest in this. Furthermore, we are becoming increasingly aware of the positive impact that we, as a company, can have.
We are intrinsically motivated to continue working on CSR and we are inspired by stakeholders within our field of work, such as suppliers and customers. To minimise the threats, we have extended the supplier assessment with criteria relating to the environment and human rights. Existing suppliers have been assessed.

BRB International has always deliberately refrained from supplying to sanctioned countries. We also monitor our customers to have a clear picture of whom they sell to. In addition, our organization applies the ‘buy the change’ principle. Purchasing products from producers (suppliers) that are compliant with employee safety at their production sites is our focus.

“CSR has always been a core part of our business. Applying CSR integrally throughout the chain will take the initiatives to the next level!”
Public policy at BRB International
The public policy at BRB International is characterized by the stimulation of employee initiatives. In 2019, a number of local charities were supported.

Up to 2018 employees of BRB International in Ittervoort participate in NLdoet – a major annual Dutch volunteer activity by the Oranje Fonds. The employees of BRB International actively helped with preparing afternoon snacks, making wooden planter boxes, and preparing the garden for spring at one of the assisted living locations of PSW (Pedagogic Social Work) in Nederweert. PSW supports children and adults who need guidance and support in giving meaning to their own lives.
Unfortunately due to circumstances and too little registrations our employees didn’t participate in 2019. We are determined to pay more attention to this event again, and get our employees enthusiastic in 2020.
